Couples therapy with Colleen Leafloor

  • What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is psychotherapy geared towards the management, improvement, maintenance, and evolution of relationships. Couples therapy can explore issues related to communication, conflict resolution, intimacy, emotional regulation, connection/disconnection, infidelity, boundaries, and more.

  • My approach to couples therapy

My approach to couples therapy is informed by my theoretical approach, as well as my deep reverence for relationship, honesty, collaboration, clarity, intimacy with depth, and connection.

Couples therapy is not designed to be a life-long initiative. Although couples do sometimes chose to make couples therapy a part of their relationship maintenance, maintenance therapy is often done on an 'as needed' basis. The intention and hope from couples therapy is to empower the individuals towards collective and sustainable change, where intervention can transition to be about helping through particularly big struggles, and the day-to-day complexities of relational life can be handled with confidence outside of sessions.

Couples therapy FAQ

  • If you are interested in couples therapy, feel free to reach out with any questions you may have via our Contact Us page.

Consultations are free and done by secure video call or telephone call. During consultation calls, we can explore any concerns or inquiries you may have regarding couples therapy, including questions related to approach, process, experience, theoretical alignment, pricing, expectations, responsibilities, etc.,

  • The first session is an intake session. The goal of an intake session is to get to know one another, exploring both who you are and what the presenting concerns you wish to address are. It is also an opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with my approach, and determine if this approach is right for you, your worldview, your preferences, and your partner.

  • The short answer to this is no. This would be considered a largely unethical practice by the CRPO and CCPA (provincial and national regulatory colleges). At no time should the same therapist be acting as your individual therapist (in one-on-one sessions) and your couples therapist (in separate sessions) within the same time-frame.

The longer answer to this is that there are some scenarios where couples therapy will occasionally include an individual session or two with one or more partners not included, case depending.

These questions have some ethical grey areas and must be explored in clinical supervision before any commitments are made to the client. This is an ethical safeguard for any clinical practice that practices within the commitments outlined by the CRPO and CCPA for ethical practice and professional accountability.
